Blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng arrived in New York on Saturday, nearly a month after escaping house arrest and seeking sanctuary at the American embassy in an ordeal that had triggered a diplomatic crisis.

The plane carrying Chen along with his wife and two children landed in Newark, New Jersey Saturday evening, as the dissident made his way to New York to begin a new life studying law.

After reaching Manhattan, Chen—one of China's most prominent activists and a crusading lawyer who had exposed forced abortions and sterilizations under the country's "one-child" policy—said he was grateful Chinese officials had handled his situation with "restraint and calm," but also that he hoped they were "sincere and not lying" in pledging to protect his rights as a citizen.

Burma’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi lamented Tuesday that the international community was becoming “too optimistic” about the reform process in the country, cautioning against taking democratization for granted.

She made the observation after talks with visiting South Korean President Lee Myung Bak and in a video conference at the launch of a freedom project in Washington by former U.S. president George W Bush.

“We are at a point in history when there is a possibility for transition, but I do not think we can take it for granted that this transition will come about,” the 66-year-old Nobel Laureate told reporters after her meeting with Lee in Rangoon on Tuesday.

North Koreans are gaining greater access to foreign media that is changing their perceptions of the outside world, providing alternatives to domestic propaganda, and undermining the hardline communist state’s grip on information, according to a new report released Thursday.

Though the reclusive state has long relied on an information blockade to keep out unwanted foreign influences and shore up its control, a stronger flow of foreign content into the country is “laying the groundwork for a more open North Korea,” global research and consultancy InterMedia said in the report.

“North Koreans today have significantly greater access to outside information than they did 20 years ago,” and more than many Korea-watchers had assumed, said the U.S. government-funded study, titled “A Quiet Opening: North Koreans in a Changing Media Environment.”

The U.S. State Department expressed “great concern” Tuesday over the deteriorating human rights situation in Vietnam, saying it is studying whether the tightly-governed state should be included in a blacklist of nations suppressing religious freedom.

Describing the situation as “unacceptable,” the department’s human rights chief Michael Posner said Hanoi’s desire to increase engagement with the U.S. is contingent on measurable progress in improving its rights record.

“In Vietnam today, respect for human rights continues to deteriorate, as it has for the past several years,” Posner, who is Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, said at a hearing held by the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the U.S. Congress in Washington.

President Thein Sein of Myanmar acknowledged that his country had bought conventional weapons from North Korea over the past 20 years but vowed in a meeting with Mr. Lee in the Burmese capital on Monday to end that practice, said the aide to the South Korean president, Kim Tae-hyo.

The presidential office in Seoul confirmed Mr. Kim’s comments.

Mr. Thein Sein also indicated Tuesday that Myanmar had not pursued the development ofnuclear weapons and vowed to honor a U.N. Security Council resolution that bans countries from engaging in activities that could assist North Korea’s nuclear and long-range missile programs, Mr. Kim said.

“I urged President Thein Sein not to do any trade with North Korea that violates international regulations,” Mr. Lee said at a joint news conference with the Burmese opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon on Tuesday, the South Korean news media reported.

Mr. Lee recognized Myanmar’s recent efforts toward political change, including the government’s willingness to let him meet with Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, who, after years under house arrest, is now a member of Parliament.

After a 45-minute meeting with Mr. Lee, Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi said that South Korea and Myanmar had much in common, including having had to “take the hard road to democratic leadership,” The Associated Press reported.

Crown Holdings, Inc. To Build New Beverage Can Plant In Sihanoukville, Cambodia

PHILADELPHIA, May 15, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Crown Holdings, Inc. CCK -0.30% ( www.crowncork.com ), a leading supplier of metal packaging products worldwide, announced today that it will build a new beverage can plant in Sihanoukville, Cambodia to meet growing demand. Sihanoukville is on the Gulf of Thailand approximately 200 km from the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. It is the country's primary commercial port and is also enjoying growing tourism.

The new plant will be sized to accommodate multiple can lines and have an initial annual production capacity of 725 million two-piece 33cl aluminum cans. The facility is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2013 and will be Crown's second beverage can plant in Cambodia including its two line operation in Phnom Penh.

"Cambodia is growing at a steady pace and this in turn is driving increased demand for our customers' products, and we are experiencing a preference on their part for two-piece aluminum beverage cans," commented Jozef Salaerts, President of CROWN Asia-Pacific. Claims lodged with Cambodia's six largest insurers declined by more than 90% in the first quarter of 2012, according to Cambodian daily The Phnom Penh Post.

Statistics from the General Insurance Association of Cambodia showed that claims worth $2.1m were lodged between January and March this year, down from $24m during the same period in 2011.

The value of claims in 2011 was raised by fires that gutted two clothing factories early last year, Insurance Insight understands. Increased industrial performance and safety were cited by industry insiders as factors in the fall in incidents in 2012.

"During this time last year, we had two big garment factories, River Rich and June Textile, that cost about $22m in fire damages. But early this year, we did not face any big accidents, so things got a bit better," Ty Atith, deputy director of operations at GIAC, told The Phnom Penh Post.

Several claims worth about $500,000 each were filed this year, the majority related to engineering accidents and health claims, GIAC data shows.

CEDAC, a domestic agriculture development organisation and the Kingdom’s largest distributor of natural honey, will shrink its purchases of the commodity in the face of rising prices, the company’s president says.

Yang Saing Koma said the group would not reach its goal of buying 7,000 litres of honey from Cambodian bee-keepers, as prices had climbed past US$11.50 a litre.

ការតវ៉ាបិទផ្លូវបានចាប់ផ្តើមឡើងតាំងពីម៉ោង១០ព្រឹក នាថ្ងៃទី១២ខែឧសភា រហូតដល់ម៉ោង៤កន្លះទៀបភ្លឺ នៅថ្ងៃទី១៣ខែឧសភានេះ ទើបសម្រេចបើកផ្លូវឡើងវិញ។

លោក សេង កៅ តំណាងសហគមន៍អ្នកតវ៉ាម្នាក់បាននិយាយប្រាប់តាមទូរស័ព្ទក្រោយការបើកផ្លូវនៅថ្ងៃអាទិត្យនេះថា៖ «ការសម្រេចបើកផ្លូវឡើងវិញនេះគឺដោយសាររថយន្តអ្នកធំនិងអ្នកមានអំណាចមួយចំនួននាំគ្នាលួចបើកតាមផ្លូវវាងក្នុងដីរបស់លោកឧញ៉ា លី យ៉ុងផាត់ និងម៉្យាងទៀតគឺដោយសារអ្នកតវ៉ាអាណិតអាសូរចំពោះអ្នកដឹកទំនិញរកស៊ី»។

រថយន្តរាប់រយគ្រឿងបានជាប់គាំងនៅលើទ្រូងផ្លូវក្នុងស្រុកស្រែអំបិលខេត្តកោះកុងកាលពីថ្ងៃម្សិលមិញ។ រថយន្តភាគច្រើនគឺជារថយន្តអ្នកទេសចរនិងរថយន្តអ្នកដឹកទំនិញពីក្រុងភ្នំពេញទៅកាន់ខេត្តកោះកុង និងពីកោះកុងមកទីក្រុងភ្នំពេញ។ ការតវ៉ាកាលពីម្សិលមិញនេះធ្វើឡើងតាមទម្រង់ស្រាក់ដៃគ្នាឈរកាត់ទទឹងផ្លូវក្រោមដំណក់ទឹកភ្លៀងតាំងពីម៉ោង១២ថ្ងៃត្រង់រហូតដល់ម៉ោង៤ល្ងាចថ្ងៃទី១២ខែឧសភា។

លុះរាត្រីកាលមកដល់ អ្នកតវ៉ាប្រមាណជា២០០នាក់បាននាំគ្នាកាប់ដើមស្វាយចន្ទីមកដាក់បង្ខាំងនៅកណ្តាលផ្លូវ។ អ្នកខ្លះអង្គុយលើដើមស្វាយចន្ទីមួយយប់ទល់ភ្លឺមិនបានសម្រាន្តទេ។ អ្នកខ្លះទៀត បាននាំគ្នាក្រាលតង់ដើម្បីសម្រាកយកកម្លាំងខ្លះ។ នៅពេលយប់ មិនមានភ្លៀងធ្លាក់ដូចកាលពីពេលថ្ងៃទេ។

អ្នកតវ៉ាបានបញ្ជាក់ប្រាប់ថា យប់កាន់តែជ្រៅ ប្រជាជនអ្នកតវ៉ាមានចំនួនកាន់តែច្រើនពីព្រោះអ្នកដំណើរផ្សេងទៀតបានចូលរួមបន្ថែមទៀត។ បូកទាំងអ្នកតវ៉ា ទាំងអ្នកស្ទះផ្លូវ មនុស្សអាចចំនួនដល់ទៅ១០០០នាក់នៅលើដងផ្លូវត្រង់ចំណុចស្រុកស្រែអំបិល ខេត្តកោះកុង កាលពីយប់ម្សិលមិញ។

Chut Wutty's memory spurs anti-logging campaign

The death of an environmental activist, shot dead by police, has galvanised his campaign against deforestation and illegal logging in a scenic part of Cambodia.

Ratanakiri is a beautiful province in the north of this country - with volcanic lakes, waterfalls and huge areas of unspoiled forest.

Most of the people who live there belong to indigenous hill tribes who worship spirits in nature.

But peace has brought smooth-surfaced roads and outsiders to rural parts of the country that were once remote.

The hill tribes complain that the newcomers try to trick them out of their traditional lands - and hack down the trees which make up what they call the "spirit forests".

A young man from the Tampeun people told me he knew where loggers were at work - and volunteered to show me. So we jumped into a battered pickup - and slithered along a narrow trail through the forest.

Suddenly we burst out into a clearing. And immediately it seemed that we had made a horrible mistake.

Chut Wutty was one of Cambodia's most outspoken activists

Among piles of cut timber, there was a group of young men who did not look thrilled to see us. Several were dressed in military fatigues - and at least a couple were toting AK-47 rifles. The only way out was behind us.

I jumped out of the car, smiled and shouted hello.

A slightly older man turned and beamed broadly. It turned out that not only did he speak English, but he was an avid listener to the BBC. Instead of being held at gunpoint, we were invited to lunch.

I remembered this incident, a few years on, when I heard about the violent death of Chut Wutty.

I knew him a little - he used to be a soldier before getting a job with the British environment monitor Global Witness, which meant he saw at first-hand the devastation of Cambodia's forests.

When his employers were kicked out of Cambodia for alleging connections between the government and illegal loggers, Wutty set up his own organisation.
