Last of Mondulkiri commune torn down by authorities

Authorities in Mondulkiri province started tearing down the last of 195 houses claimed by villagers in Rayum commune at about 7 a.m. this morning. Three hours later, not one was standing.

Many villagers say they have no idea where they are going to live, and one man vowed to set up a tent for lack of any better options.

Authorities, who have surrounded the village for a week, say the villagers’ homes sit on land belonging to a Vietnamese rubber company. They had set a deadline for villagers to clear out by this morning or be forcibly cleared out. Joint forces including military police and soldiers had already burned more than 50 homes on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Senor members of the monastic community yesterday detained Buddhist monk Loun Savath, an award-winning human rights activist, after he took photos of protesting Boeung Kak lake villagers outside Phnom Penh municipal court.

Monks, police and unidentified men in plain clothes violently forced Loun Savath into a Land Cruiser outside the courthouse and whisked him away from the scene as more than 60 protesters, flanked by about 100 police armed with guns, batons and shields, called for the release of 13 Boeung Kak women who were being questioned inside.

Cambodia is facing a cycle of continued aid dependency and corruption, an American filmmaker says. Tim Sorel, who produced the short documentary, "The Trap of Saving Cambodia," told VOA Khmer that local and international NGOs are complicit in the nation's corruption because they allow it or abet it. However, some NGOs are starting to stand up to it and refusing to pay bribes or tolerate other forms of corruption, he said. (Men Kimseng with TV interview in Washington studio.)

Environmental activists from Prey Lang forest have brought their concerns to Washington seeking international support to end deforestation in Cambodia.
Phouk Hong, a Kuy ethnic minority who led a three-member team, told VOA Khmer in an TV interview that concession companies have destroyed the forest and do more harm to local culture than good. VOA Khmer's Men Kimseng reports.
